National Pathology Day: Honoring a Pioneer: Dr V R Khanolkar

Pathology is the invisible force behind every accurate diagnosis – yet, it often stays in the shadows. To bring it into the spotlight, we now celebrate National Pathology Day in India on April 13, marking the birth anniversary of Dr. V.R. Khanolkar, the father of pathology and medical research in India.

Why This Day Matters
Dr. Khanolkar was a trailblazer – the first Indian to earn an MD in Pathology from the University of London, a founder of major institutions like Tata Memorial Hospital and the Indian Cancer Research Centre, and a mentor to many legends. His contributions spanned cancer, leprosy, genetics, and more.

First Indian to earn an MD in Pathology from the University of London, 1921
Founded Departments of Pathology at KEM and Tata Memorial Hospital.
Led Indian Cancer Research Center as Director (1953–1963).
Pivotal role in Planning AIIMS, New Delhi, PGI, Chandigarh & Bhabha Atomic Research Centre
First to confirm cutaneous neural involvement in all forms of leprosy.
Was the president of the International Cancer Research Commission.
Founder of the Teaching Pathologists Association (Bombay), The Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction
Founder of Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists ( IAPM)
Served as its first president of IAPM from 1950 to 52.
Served on the WHO and UN panels as an expert in the field of leprosy, radiation, and cancer
The Government of India conferred a Padma Bhushan on him in 1955
